Ahora, sin embargo, un ratón de laboratorio sorprendió a un equipo de científicos estadounidenses al mostrar una extraordinaria capacidad regenerativa.

Los investigadores creen que este descubrimiento podría ofrecer una nueva posibilidad de que estas propiedades algún día puedan ser transferidas a otros mamíferos.

Accidental

La profesora Ellen Herber-Katz y su equipo de investigadores del Instituto Wistar, en Filadelfia, Estados unidos, realizaban un estudio inmunológico con ratones de la variedad Murphy Roths Large o MRL.

Los científicos habían "marcado" a los ratones perforándoles un pequeño orificio en la oreja, el típico procedimiento de identificación en los laboratorios.

Fue entonces cuando los sorprendió el extraordinario descubrimiento.

El descubrimiento accidental de la profesora Haber-Katz abrió un nuevo camino de investigación para analizar las propiedades regenerativas de los ratones.

Luego, los científicos utilizaron una sonda para hacer una pequeña herida en el corazón de los ratones.

Poco después descubrieron que el tejido logró regenerarse y no había ninguna cicatriz.

Posteriormente analizaron lo que sucedía tras una lesión de la espina dorsal, y una vez más descubrieron regeneración de células y leve cicatrizado.

La profesora Heber-Katz y su equipo estudian actualmente por qué los ratones MRL poseen estas extraordinarias capacidades regenerativas.

"Este animal tiene una excepcional habilidad para llevar a cabo proliferación celular y falta de cicatrizado", señala Heber-Katz.

"Estos son los dos elementos clave que explican por qué nosotros no somos capaces de regenerarnos", agrega.

La investigadora cree que uno de los factores que impide la regeneración en la mayoría de los mamíferos es una membrana que se forma cuando el organismo comienza a auto repararse.

Cuando los anfibios llevan a cabo la regeneración de un miembro no se forma esta membrana.
